What Is A Realistic Income For A Stay At Home Mom?
Envision holding a position that has no beginning or no ending hours. No predictability, and very little in the way of routine. A job that often is not very structured, and it’s primary qualifications are readiness, flexibility, awareness, and stamina. For stay-at-home moms, this is their daily life.
A lot of people ask what is a realistic income for a stay at home mom? Some people may argue whether or not it is a real job. You know since there are no benefits, no breaks, no benefits or paid vacations. But, in my point of view it is a real job. It is just as demanding as any other job if not more. Instead of your boss sitting in his office behind a desk barking orders at everyone that passes by. Your boss is crawling around between your legs pulling at your clothes, whining, crying, demanding more attention all while your are cooking, cleaning, handling finances, paying bills, organizing the family vacation, managing the grocery list, checking email, doing laundry, organizing clothes, preparing a dinner plan, making space for you other to come home from school or daycare so they can do their homework, etc, etc, etc…
To the outsider unfamiliar with the inner workings, being a stay-at-home mom appears easy. But the mom at home knows the reality is quite the opposite. The discomfort and exasperation that a corporate woman would feel spending her days at home tending to children and household duties is most likely the same discomfort and exasperation a stay-at-home mom would feel functioning in the outside world, away from her children. Each being accustommed to the perks and demands of their particular station in life, not many would decide with full knowledge of the situation, to change places in a moment’s notice.
Before we can begin to consider a realistic income for stay-at-home moms, let’s consider a few more of the realities of the position. What gets done or doesn’t get done, remains in place into the following day. This is a one-woman operation! All decisions rest on mom, severely guided by the little ones. There is no one to ask for a day off, or to request early leave. Everything revolves around the care and needs of the children.
Considering all the professions out there that you do get paid for lets see how many stay at home moms would qualify for those jobs. Lets see you have to be a nurse, a cook, a cleaner, a driver, a problem solver, a plumber (for all those moms out there whose kids realized the joy of throwing there toys down the toilet and watching them go wee.) a cook, a mastermind at organization, a expert stain remover, a hair dresser ( for that chunk of gum sitting in your daughters hair) a teacher, a cook, a waitress, a banker( to handle all those bills and finances), a accountant(because money doesn’t grow on trees you know), A major saver (prices are going up on everything), a handyman to fix all those toys that you stepped on in the process of doing 10,000 things at once, a laundress and last but not least a wife.
So yeah we don’t have to punch in at 9 and punch out at 5 or drive through grid lock traffic and deal with deadlines or bosses breathing done our necks. But our days start before 9 and never end at 5. We kept going and going until at least half of what we planned on doing for the day is done. We don’t get all dressed up in our uniforms or put on business suits. But i would pick my outfit over any suit any day. It may not be as glamorous or luxurious. But its me. I would pick my sweats or jeans and a T-shirt over any designer suit.

So what is a realistic income for a stay at home mom? To me is should be about 15,000 a year more or less depending how many kids you have. Sure we don’t have to spend money on 10 dollar lattes or 50 lunch plates. But are we not entitled to go out every once in a while and feel like we are more than just a mom. And get our nails and hair done and buy something special to make us feel like the woman we deserved to be seen as for we are the ones that are caring for our future doctors lawyers web site designers maybe even the next president who knows. All of us stay at home moms agree the best payment come from seeing our kids grow up everyday right before our very eyes. Knowing that we were the one that taught them how to walk and talk and be the tiny little person they are. But hey a salary wouldn’t hurt right? All those that agree let me hear you.
